COVID-19: Your New Directions Update

Dear Community Friends,

At New Directions in Langley, we planned, organized, and implemented a hazard reduction policy with the safety and health of our students, staff, and community at the forefront.

On January 24, 2020, New Directions recognized the potential threat caused by the emergence of COVID-19 and decided to implement a policy and practice requiring returning students from any travel outside Canada to self-isolate for 20 days. This policy was translated into 8 key languages and posted at each door. Our plan to protect staff and students evolved into full education based on the information recommended by the World Health Organization; BC Centre for Disease Control; and Fraser Health. Without exception all staff, new and returning students complied, appreciative of the steps to safeguard health and risk to all.

New Directions students from Literacy to LINC 8, are currently on Spring Break, and following the instructions of the Provincial and Federal Governments for Social Distancing and Self-isolation, well-known terms to all of you by now.

With recent announcements and instructions from IRCC, our funder, rather than resuming classes on April 6th, New Directions will be offering Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada via telephone, e-mail, and online in a customized Client-Centred manner.

To the students at New Directions, your teacher will be contacting you very soon by phone, or by e-mail, to plan on activities based on your needs. Classrooms will be closed but you will keep your place in class through these measures at this extraordinary time. Foremost, we will consider your health, your needs, and your situation.

Our In-Person services will be restricted while we review new information on a daily basis. New applications are advised to contact Surrey Assessment Centre for current instructions.

For course information, New Directions has our staff in place to answer calls at 604-530-0535, or review the information on this website or send your questions to

We have taken measures to support our Instruction and Support team so they can continue to provide services you can trust.

New Directions clients have access to the excellent resources of the Language Companion so review and read them on an ongoing basis. For information on the COVID-19, remember to refer to the resources provided to you and take breaks from any information overload.

As your Langley and Aldergrove Language Provider, New Directions wants to remind you that we are all committed to building community together. Our connections will continue to be our greatest strength, as will be our agility and willingness to adapt to change.
